JUNETEENTH! ⁠⁠A Historic Day in History!⁠⁠Take time to learn a short piece of the significance of the day!⁠⁠On September 22, 1862, President Abraham Lincoln issued the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, which declared “That on the 1st day of January, A.D. 1863, all persons held as slaves within any State or designated part of a State the people whereof shall then be in rebellion against the United States shall be then, thenceforward and forever free…” However, much of the White power structure who enslaved the Blacks, relying on the forced labor to maintain their economic floor, did not want to heed the government and free their slaves. Therefore many of the oppressors never told the oppressed they were freed, and maintained slavery in multiple states for almost 2 more years.⁠⁠On June 19, 1865, some 2,000 Union troops of the 13th Army Corps, under Major General Gordon Granger, arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas. The army announced that the more than 250,000 enslaved black people in the state, were free by executive decree. So from that day until now, June 19th came to be known as "Juneteenth," by the newly freed people in Texas – also called Emancipation Day, or Juneteenth Independence Day, a holiday commemorating the culminated end of slavery in the United States.
